Living in Sarasota means a change of scenery does not have to wait for a weeklong vacation.

You can trade your usual routine for wild Florida, a museum afternoon, or an island adventure with the journey built into the fun.

For the biggest outing on this list, Key West Express offers a memorable escape across the Gulf, provided you are ready for a very long day.

Key West Express: make the journey part of the getaway

The ferry departs from Fort Myers Beach, not Sarasota, so your adventure begins with a southbound drive to the terminal at 1200 Main Street.

Check a live route estimate from your actual starting point and leave extra time for parking and check-in.

The operator's published outbound schedule has boarding beginning at 7 a.m., an onboard deadline of 7:30 a.m., and departure at 8 a.m.

Its FAQ advises allowing approximately 3.5 to four hours between ports, depending on weather and sea conditions.

On board, climate-controlled seating, outdoor decks, and a galley and bar make the crossing feel like part of the outing rather than a commute.

Enjoy Key West without racing the clock

Pick a manageable combination: lunch, a stroll around Old Town, and one attraction such as the Hemingway Home and Museum.

Check attraction hours and admission separately, and leave room for walking, transportation, and returning to the dock.

The published return schedule begins boarding at 5 p.m., requires passengers aboard by 5:30 p.m., and departs at 6 p.m.

That leaves roughly five to six hours between arrival and the boarding deadline under typical conditions, rather than a full day on the island.

Using the advertised crossing duration, the ferry would return to Fort Myers Beach around 9:30 to 10 p.m., before your drive home.

This is an ambitious day trip; an overnight stay near the departure port or in Key West may be a more comfortable choice.

An overnight island visit requires checking that your chosen return sailing operates.

Know the cost before booking

As checked October 13, the operator lists an adult round-trip full fare of $194 and on-site Fort Myers Beach parking at $20 per vehicle per day.

Published eight-day advance fares for adults and seniors are $170 for Monday–Thursday travel and $180 for Friday–Sunday travel.

Those discounted tickets are nonrefundable, while full fares carry cancellation conditions and possible fees.

Confirm current totals, sailing availability, and terms before paying; food, island attractions, and local transportation add to the outing's budget.

Adults need valid government-issued photo identification, and passengers under 18 must travel with an adult.

Two easier ways to change the scenery

Myakka River State Park offers a nature day without the ferry timetable, with wetlands, prairies, and opportunities to slow down and watch wildlife.

The park at 13207 State Road 72 is open from 8 a.m. to sunset; admission is $6 per vehicle carrying two to eight people.

The park currently posts a drinking-water advisory, so bring your own water and check alerts before setting off.

For an arts outing, head north to St. Petersburg and build the day around The Dali Museum.

Use the museum's official visit page for current tickets, hours, and exhibitions, then leave time for a meal rather than packing in too many stops.

Choose the day that fits your energy

Book both ferry directions before committing to the Key West plan, and recheck departure information as travel approaches.

A relaxed itinerary beats an overloaded checklist, whether your destination is a nearby park or an island across the Gulf.

The best escape gives you something new to enjoy and enough breathing room to enjoy it.
