Midnight Pass is showing signs that it may remain a lasting connection between the Gulf and Little Sarasota Bay, giving Sarasota County officials room to plan beyond emergency response.

The inlet reopened in 2024 after Hurricanes Helene and Milton reshaped the barrier island system between Siesta Key and Casey Key.

Since then, county crews and consultants have tracked its depth, cross-sectional area, flow and movement through frequent surveys.

Recent monitoring has led consultants to describe the pass as dynamically stable, meaning it continues to shift naturally while maintaining the characteristics of a functioning inlet.

Measurements cited by county consultants show the channel holding near 16 feet deep with a cross-sectional area around 1,400 square feet over recent months.

The inlet’s centerline also moves within a limited corridor rather than wandering dramatically along the shoreline.

Sarasota County commissioners voted unanimously on September 22 to continue data collection and move toward a longer-term management strategy.

That work includes planning channel markers and advisory signs, studying possible maintenance dredging in nearby channels and beginning the state and federal permitting process needed to manage the inlet.

The shift is significant because county leaders are now treating the waterway less like a temporary storm opening and more like infrastructure that may need ongoing stewardship.

Officials are also preparing an emergency response plan in case a future storm or major sand movement threatens to close the pass.

Long-term certainty is not guaranteed.

Storms, beach nourishment projects and natural sediment movement could still change the inlet quickly.

For now, though, continued coastal inlet monitoring suggests the pass is holding open well enough for Sarasota County to plan around it rather than simply hope it lasts.
