Sarasota has plenty of musicians, but one recent local performance may have had the smallest audience in town.

On September 23, a Sarasota resident noticed something unusual while playing guitar near monarch caterpillars she had brought indoors to protect from lizards.

The caterpillars began bouncing and moving with the vibrations, creating the unmistakable appearance of a tiny head-banging rock crowd.

For a few seconds, the scene looked less like a bedroom with a milkweed plant and more like the front row at a very, very small concert.

The funniest part is that nobody had bought tickets.

The woman who filmed the moment later said she learned the caterpillars were likely reacting to overstimulation from the vibrations rather than developing a sudden appreciation for guitar music.

Science may have an explanation, but the video still looks wonderfully ridiculous.

Monarch caterpillars spend much of their time doing the serious work of eating milkweed and preparing for transformation.

That makes an accidental jam session feel like a pretty good reminder that even ordinary backyard wildlife can deliver a laugh when nobody is expecting it.

And in Sarasota, apparently even the caterpillars know how to put on a show.
