Day trips from Sarasota can range from an easy nature outing to a full-day island adventure. Key West Express is the spotlight option, with Myakka River State Park and St. Petersburg's Dali Museum offering simpler alternatives.

The ferry leaves Fort Myers Beach, not Sarasota. Drive to 1200 Main Street with time for parking and boarding, which starts at 7 a.m.; passengers must be aboard by 7:30 a.m. for the published 8 a.m. departure.

Allow approximately 3.5 to four hours each way, depending on conditions. A same-day return leaves roughly five to six hours in Key West before the 5:30 p.m. boarding deadline and 6 p.m. departure.

The expected return to Fort Myers Beach is around 9:30–10 p.m., before the drive home. This is a long-day outing; an overnight stay may make it more comfortable.

Published adult full-fare round trips are $194, with parking listed at $20 daily. Eight-day advance adult and senior fares are $170 Monday–Thursday or $180 Friday–Sunday, with nonrefundable terms. Confirm availability, prices, and cancellation conditions before booking.

For a gentler outing, Myakka offers nature exploration from 8 a.m. to sunset, with $6 vehicle admission for two to eight people; bring water because of the posted advisory. The Dali Museum offers an arts-focused alternative. Check official updates and keep the itinerary manageable.

Joke Of The Day

Why did the pelican get elected to the Sarasota city council?

He promised to keep his bill transparent and still had the best pouch plan for public storage.

Sarasota, Venice, and the Bradenton area have an upbeat October–December 2026 ahead, with pumpkins, live music, holiday markets, boat parades, and New Year's Eve outings.

Hunsader Farms' remaining Pumpkin Festival weekends are October 17–18 and 24–25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission ranges from free for children under 5 to $15 for ages 10+, plus $5 parking; bring cash.

The Van Wezel presents Ghostbusters in Concert October 29, Cirque Dreams Holidaze November 21, and A Very Broadway Christmas December 21, all at 7 p.m. Venice's Mayor's Hometown Christmas brings a tree lighting, choirs, and Santa to Centennial Park November 27, from 5 to 7 p.m.

The European Holiday Market runs December 2–6 in Palmetto. Venice's boat parade starts December 5 at 6 p.m. Sarasota's boat parade is December 12, with free viewing at Bayfront Park and Marina Jack; dining requires reservations. The Manatee River parade is also December 12.

Sarasota Orchestra's Happy Holley Days runs December 9–13 at Holley Hall, with tickets starting at $50 and performance times varying by day.

On December 31, Florida Studio Theatre's Resolution Rewind starts at 7:30 p.m. in Sarasota. Venice's city calendar lists Sharky's celebration from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m.; check admission and reservations with the venue.

The full 2026 Pineapple Drop schedule remains unverified, although the theatre references it in its New Year's plans. Reserve ticketed outings early and recheck organizer updates before traveling.

Tip of The Day

Turn Your Saturday Into a Sarasota Treasure Hunt

Skip the usual errands this weekend and head to the Sarasota Farmers Market on Lemon Avenue with one simple mission: talk to a vendor you have never approached before. Sarasota's market is packed with local artists, specialty growers, and small-batch food makers who rarely get a chance to share their story. Ask them what they are most excited about right now — you will almost always walk away with a sample, a recommendation for another hidden local gem, or an invitation to an upcoming community event you never would have found on your own.

This tiny habit of one new conversation per visit quietly builds the kind of neighborhood connection that makes living in Sarasota feel genuinely special, not just scenic.

Swarm prevention in Florida beekeeping starts well before a colony is hanging from a tree.

Strong colonies can build quickly, and the best management focuses on usable brood space, timely supering, queen performance, splits and regular inspections.

Queen cells are important warning signs, but simply cutting them out does not solve the underlying causes of swarm pressure.

Early observation gives the beekeeper more options.

For honey producers, nuc makers and working apiaries, the goal is not to fight honey bee biology but to direct colony strength toward production, healthy increases and dependable queen performance.

Willhoite Farms, LLC approaches swarm management as part of year-round colony management, with an emphasis on staying ahead of the bees before a colony becomes fully committed to swarming.

Interesting Facts

Sarasota might be known for its beaches, but the good stuff happening beneath the surface is even more exciting:

  • A thriving arts pipeline: Sarasota is home to one of the few remaining circus arts training programs in the country — the Sailor Circus, founded in 1949 — which lets local youth learn trapeze, acrobatics, and aerial acts, keeping a century-old tradition alive through student performers.
  • Seagrass comeback: Volunteer-led restoration efforts in Sarasota Bay have helped recover thousands of square feet of seagrass beds, which serve as nurseries for juvenile fish and feeding grounds for local manatees, signaling measurable improvement in water quality.
  • A reading renaissance: Sarasota County's public library system consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for per-capita circulation, meaning residents here check out more books per person than in most comparable communities across the country.
  • Unexpected tech hub: Sarasota has quietly attracted a growing cluster of health-tech and software startups, earning informal recognition as one of Florida's emerging mid-sized innovation corridors outside the traditional Miami and Orlando ecosystems.
  • Marine turtle milestone: Local conservation volunteers on Sarasota's barrier islands have documented record loggerhead sea turtle nesting seasons in recent years, a sign that decades of beach lighting ordinances and nest-protection programs are genuinely paying off.
