"Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow."

Interesting Facts

Sarasota may be famous for its beaches, but the real stories worth celebrating run a little deeper than the shoreline:

  • A library that lends more than books: The Sarasota County Library System operates a Library of Things program, allowing cardholders to borrow items like telescopes, musical instruments, and garden tools — making enrichment hobbies accessible to residents regardless of income.
  • Youth arts pipeline: The Sarasota Ballet operates one of the few professional ballet school training programs in the southeastern United States, and alumni have gone on to join major companies internationally, quietly making Sarasota a significant launching pad for young dance talent.
  • Monarch butterfly corridor: Sarasota's Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has been actively expanding its milkweed and native plantings to support monarch butterfly migration, part of a broader community-wide effort that has helped designate parts of the region as certified wildlife habitat areas.
  • A thriving farmers market milestone: The Sarasota Farmers Market, held weekly downtown, is one of Florida's longest continuously running farmers markets, having operated for over four decades — a testament to sustained community investment in local agriculture and small business.
  • Free community concerts with deep roots: The Sarasota Orchestra offers free community concerts and has one of the longest continuously operating music programs in Florida, giving residents at all economic levels consistent access to live professional orchestral performance.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas sing-along is such a fun idea. My older one knows every word so she is going to love this.”

Sarasota and Venice beach visitors still have a role in protecting sea turtles as the local nesting season continues through October 31. This guide explains how to follow the local research and make a beach outing more turtle-friendly.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium posts nest updates for beaches from Longboat Key through Venice. Its 2026 figures remain preliminary until the season ends and the data receive a thorough review.

A nest count is not a total turtle population count. Readers should check the reporting year, geographic boundaries and measurement before comparing numbers. Nests, false crawls and hatchlings describe different parts of the nesting process.

Practical protection starts with leaving the shoreline clear. Remove furniture and belongings at night, fill holes, level sand structures and take litter away. Stay outside marked nesting areas and leave stakes and ropes in place.

Keep the beach dark as well as clear. Avoid flash photography and lights aimed at turtles. Beachfront visitors should follow turtle-friendly lighting guidance and prevent indoor light from spilling onto the sand.

Watch nesting turtles quietly from a distance, keep their path open and never dig into nests or carry hatchlings into the water. Contact trained responders when an animal needs help. Follow Mote’s nesting updates, help-sea-turtles guidance and conservation program for more information before your next visit.

Sarasota’s fall weather does not mean the air conditioner is finished for the year, but it is a useful time to check the heating functions your home may soon need.

Before booking service, review the last maintenance date and your equipment manufacturer’s recommendations. Ask whether the appointment covers both cooling and heating, especially if your home uses a heat pump.

A useful checklist includes controls, appropriate electrical checks, coils, blower performance, airflow and the condensate drain. A blocked drain can damage the home and affect humidity, so mention any previous leaks or unexpected shutoffs.

Describe uneven room temperatures, unusual sounds and longer running times. If your system has auxiliary heat or fuel-burning components, ask the technician to explain the relevant checks rather than assuming every tune-up includes the same work.

Between visits, inspect the filter monthly, follow replacement directions and keep supply and return openings clear. Leave electrical compartments and refrigerant work to qualified professionals.

Ask for written findings, a clear price and approval before extra repairs. Verify the contractor’s current Florida license through the official state lookup.

Preseason maintenance is an opportunity to understand your equipment and prepare for the next change in weather. It is not a guarantee against future repairs, and an expensive replacement recommendation should come with an explanation of the problem and options.
